“Ethical tourism is the way forward for captive elephants,” says Mossman, who notes that in many areas, particularly in Thailand, there is no longer adequate land to release them into the wild. Brown also suggests that keeping ex-working or captive elephants in sanctuaries can be the best option.
Interacting with the animals is one of the country's major tourism draws, and a new organization is trying to make it more humane. More than half of Thailand's 7,000 elephants live in captivity. ... But many of the so-called elephant camps let visitors bathe with them and ride them.
Sixteen to eighteen hours, or nearly 80% of an elephant's day is spent feeding. Elephants consume grasses, small plants, bushes, fruit, twigs, tree bark, and roots. Tree bark is a favorite food source for elephants. It contains calcium and roughage, which aids digestion.
The cruel process of intensively conditioning the elephants to obey keepers and allow people to ride them goes largely unseen by tourists. “In order to ensure they are safe around humans, the baby elephants must be broken in – a brutal and distressing process known as 'crushing the spirit',” says Brown.
An elephant with the trunk pointed downwards stores luck and energy. It is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge allowing you to easily overcome various tasks and obstacles. To stay grounded at work or to reserve strength and vitality at home, the downward trunk elephant might be for you!
Plight Of The Asian Elephant Asian elephants are an endangered species. Experts believe there are now less than 2000 wild elephants living in Thailand. The population is declining at a rapid rate due to loss of habitat. Illegal capture and trade for use in the tourism industry is also a big problem.
According to researchers, elephants hug by putting their trunks in each other's mouths, offering comfort through physical contact.
In the wild, elephants eat mostly grass, wild fruits, twigs, shrubs, bamboo and bananas. Their main food source is grass, when it is available to them. Elephants will also happily eat tree bark, plant roots and even soil.
This tour is humane and fun. You do not ride the elephants but you care for them. You are allowed to feed them, get them muddy then give a bath. You will get dirty but it is so worth it.
We visited the park by taxi rather than on a tour. My mother is 84 and most of the tours seemed to be designed for 20 somethings. THe elephants were brought to us and we fed them for a short time paying for the food. It was by far the best way for my mother to fulfill her desire to see the elephants. the animals we saw were well treated as far as we could see but there were clearly a lot of visitors in areas we did not visit. I think we may have had the best experience!
The elephants were in a sorry state. Many seem to be overworked for tourist rides etc. Conditions do not seem very hygienic.
Spent a lovely morning with these gentle giants, an amazing experience being able to get so close to them feeding and washing them, friendly staff and they pick up and drop back to hotels, recommend
We have visited this place and it is nice to see how Thai-People take care of these great animals. Congratulation.
I can’t say enough. What an incredible day! The staff was amazing, informative and fun. The elephants are welk caref for, happy and loving life. Having the connection time, touching them and being so close was unbelievable. I absolutely loved it!!!!!
Very friendly staff! Keep up the good work saving the elephants! Visit this park instead of riding them and stop animal abuse!
